This was the 2nd time I gave this class a choice. They did well. There was a lot of productive work, and I have never seen this class so quiet as when they know I'm going to give them a choice. Clean up was a little rocky because the Collage center was still rather messy. I straightened it up after they left, so I'm just going to give them the benefit of the doubt for now, but I need to remember to warn them next time.
I'm constantly amazed that every time I've introduced this idea to a new group, it's like instantaneous work. Maybe 1 or 2 kids in a class "don't know what to do." But that usually goes away when I give them something to do. Also, the kids who have the hardest time with the specific traditional assignments always are bursting with ideas.
2nd
This group of 2nd graders has been choosing for a while, and today was their "free art" day that they had earned by good behavior. So we had different choices- They could choose Drawing and Collage, as usual, but I also got out modeling clay and scratch board for them. They had a good time. Lots of clay artists.
3rd
My 3rd grade today was the group that has been painting the windows in the front of the building. I talked with them a lot today about public art, and the stuff that goes along with it. They were interested in learning about graffiti, so I will get up a series of mini-lessons on street art for them. This should be fun.
Now, here're some photos.
